Syaprubesi-Rasuwagadhi Road Undergoing Expansion and Reconstruction

Rasuwagadhi. The Syaprubesi-Rasuwagadhi road, a major land route for Nepal-China trade, is currently undergoing upgrading with the assistance of the Chinese government. Last year, due to floods in the Lendhe River on the Chinese side, various sections of the road were severely damaged, and reconstruction along with the expansion of the road to two lanes has been initiated.

As construction work is ongoing, many parts of the road have become muddy during the monsoon season. Difficulties are being faced in the operation of cargo vehicles due to the ongoing excavation and widening of the road. In particular, containers and large trucks that are imported and exported between Nepal and China are facing problems navigating the narrow and muddy road.

The Rasuwagadhi border crossing is Nepal's busiest northern trade point with China. Hundreds of cargo vehicles enter Nepal from Kerung, China, and goods are exported from Nepal daily via this route. For this reason, prioritizing the increase in road capacity and safe operation, the construction of a modern two-lane road has been started.

Last year's floods washed away some parts of the road, damaged walls, and increased the risk of landslides. Following that, the Chinese government has undertaken the upgrading work with the objective of reconstructing the damaged road and making it permanently safe. During construction, road widening, new retaining walls, culverts, and landslide control structures are being built.

Upon completion of construction, two-way vehicle operation will be possible on the Syaprubesi-Rasuwagadhi road, travel time will decrease, and the movement of cargo trucks will become safer and more effective. It is believed that this will further facilitate trade and tourism between Nepal and China, as well as the supply system of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing.

However, construction work has been somewhat affected due to the monsoon season. As mud, potholes, and landslide risks persist on the road, concerned authorities have urged drivers using this route to exercise extreme caution.
