Consumer Awareness Campaign Nepal Urges Government for Consumer Rights Protection

Kathmandu. Consumer Awareness Campaign Nepal has drawn the government's attention to protect the rights and interests of consumers. The campaign team met with Chief Secretary Govind Bahadur Karki and provided suggestions for establishing good governance in the market for goods and services.

The team led by campaign chairman Krishnaprasad Bhandari Marseli reached Singha Durbar and requested Chief Secretary Karki to ensure meaningful and effective monitoring of the consumer goods and services sector to protect the interests of the general consumers. Chairman Bhandari congratulated the newly appointed Chief Secretary of the Government of Nepal, Govind Bahadur Karki, on his appointment to the high post of civil service and also presented the annual souvenir of the Awareness Campaign along with institutional suggestions for establishing good governance in the market for goods and services.

The campaign has suggested that the government should bring a timely action plan targeting the festivals, keeping in mind the price increases of goods and services due to the tax provisions in the new budget, the small and big festivals starting from the month of Shrawan, the fluctuations in petroleum prices due to international reasons and their impact, and the resulting supply system difficulties.

Similarly, Bhandari drew the attention of Chief Secretary Karki to include the Consumer Protection Act, 2075, among the laws that need immediate reform, as the Government of Nepal is preparing to enact and reform 166 laws as part of its initiative to work as a Law Reform and Construction Year for the fiscal year 2083-84.

Along with Bhandari, a team of officials including the campaign's Vice-President Rohit Dahal, General Secretary Chintamani Parajuli, and member Murari Basti, concerned about consumer interests, has also drawn the attention of other regulatory bodies of the government. During the same process, the team visited the Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection and drew the attention of Director General Motiram Sapkota and Director Anil Kirati regarding the activities being carried out for the rights and interests of consumers.
