Annapurna I Ascent Celebrates 76 Years

Myagdi. It has been 76 years since Annapurna I was climbed. It has been 76 years today since the 8,091-meter-high Annapurna Himal, located at the border of Myagdi, Kaski, Manang, and Mustang districts, was climbed. The base camp of this mountain falls within the geography of Narchyang of Annapurna Rural Municipality-4, Myagdi.< p>

This mountain is called the eldest mountain because it was the first human footstep on a mountain higher than eight thousand meters. Three years after the team of France's Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal summited Annapurna on June 3, 1950, the world's highest peak, Sagarmatha, was successfully climbed.< p>

Annapurna Rural Municipality Chairman Bharat Kumar Pun said that the day is being celebrated today with various programs in memory of the day that started mountaineering and introduced the mountain to the world, developing Nepal's tourism sector.< p>

On this occasion, a running race towards the base camp of Ghandruk has been organized by Annapurna Rural Municipality of Kaski, and Annapurna Ascent Day has been organized in Dordi Rural Municipality of Lamjung to promote a new trekking route.< p>

According to the Department of Tourism, 27 people in four groups had taken permission to climb Annapurna Himal this spring season, which had been climbed by 536 people until last year. Department Branch Officer Sharmila Banjade said that the details of how many of those who took permission successfully climbed are being updated.< p>

Ward Chairman of Annapurna Rural Municipality-4, Lok Bahadur Phagami, said that the day will be concluded with a 36-kilometer race from the base camp to Narchyang, a cultural program, and a prize distribution ceremony.< p>

A cash prize of Rs 100,000 has been arranged for the winner of the 20-participant open running competition, Rs 60,000 for the runner-up, Rs 35,000 for the third place, and Rs 10,000 each for the three consolation winners.< p>

The running competition has been organized with the technical support of the Nepal Ex-Servicemen's Association and the Gandaki Province Athletics Association. After the running competition, the day's closing, prize distribution, and cultural programs will be held in Narchyang, which started on Monday.< p>
