UN Under-Secretary-General Warns of Rising Landmine Threats Amid Global Conflicts

Kathmandu. UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix has warned of the increasing threat posed by landmines and explosive devices due to ongoing conflicts in regions including Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan.

Speaking in Geneva, he stated that on average, one person is killed by landmines every day, noting that the victims are often children. He highlighted severe funding constraints that are impacting demining efforts.

Describing these incidents as a dangerous situation, Lacroix emphasized the need for coordinated international cooperation involving the UN, non-governmental organizations, and member states. He also pointed out operational challenges related to deteriorating security conditions, the spread of misinformation, and emerging threats posed by modern technology.

Meanwhile, he also warned that financial pressure on peacekeeping missions has increased due to budget cuts and contributions that remain unpaid or only partially paid by member states, alongside the challenges faced by the international community.
