Man arrested in Kathmandu for online gift scam targeting women

Kathmandu. The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office has arrested a man for defrauding individuals under the pretext of sending online parcels and gifts. The arrested individual is 27-year-old Sushan Thegim Limbu (Sujan Limbu), a native of Phakphokthum Rural Municipality-6, Ilam, currently residing in Kathmandu.

According to police, Limbu created a fake profile named 'Rohan Rajput' on the social media platform TikTok to befriend Nepali women and feign romantic interest.

He would deceive victims by claiming that he had sent dollars and expensive jewelry as gifts from the United States via 'DHL' and that the items had arrived at Kathmandu Airport.

Police stated that he contacted victims via WhatsApp, claiming that customs duties and taxes needed to be paid to receive the items, and successfully swindled 200,000 rupees by having the money deposited into various bank accounts.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Limbu attempted to defraud over 40 Nepali women using the WhatsApp number in his possession.

Police have seized one Redmi mobile phone and two SIM cards from him. Information Officer and Superintendent of Police Rameshwor Karki stated that he has been sent to the District Police Range, Bhadrakali, for further investigation and legal action.
