Massive Fire Destroys Coastal Settlement in Malaysia's Borneo, Displacing Thousands

Kathmandu. A massive fire that broke out on Sunday morning in a coastal settlement on Malaysia's Borneo island has triggered a major humanitarian crisis. The blaze spread rapidly through densely packed wooden houses built on stilts over the water, completely destroying approximately 1,000 homes and displacing over 9,000 residents.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department, the fire started in a coastal 'water village' in the Sandakan district of Sabah state. Because the houses, constructed from wood and other flammable materials, were built in close proximity, the fire spread quickly. Rescue workers faced significant difficulties in controlling the blaze, which engulfed structures standing on stilts above the sea.

Officials stated that strong winds and the density of the houses contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Additionally, narrow access routes to the affected area and fluctuating water levels due to tides further hampered rescue and containment efforts.

No casualties have been confirmed in the incident so far. However, thousands of locals have lost their homes and have been relocated to temporary shelters. The local administration has stated that relief and rehabilitation efforts are underway.

Such 'water villages' in the Sabah region are often inhabited by poor and marginalized communities. These informal settlements built over the sea are at high risk of fire due to a lack of infrastructure, unsafe housing structures, and overcrowding. Many residents are low-income individuals, members of indigenous communities, or people lacking formal citizenship.

According to local village head Sharif Hashim Sharif Iting, it is initially suspected that the fire may have started during cooking and spiraled out of control. However, officials stated that an investigation into the actual cause of the fire is ongoing.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that federal and state-level agencies are coordinating relief and rescue operations with a focus on the displaced families. He affirmed that the government is committed to providing necessary assistance to those affected.

Fires have occurred repeatedly in such coastal settlements in Sabah in the past. While local authorities have acknowledged that these areas are at high risk, structural improvements and safe housing management remain challenging. This latest fire has once again highlighted the insecurity of such settlements and the need for long-term solutions.
