Gen-Z Movement Alliance Condemns Forced Evictions and Bulldozer Operations in Nepal

Kathmandu. The Gen-Z Movement Alliance has expressed serious concern over the use of bulldozers to demolish private homes and squatter settlements under the pretext of clearing encroached land, citing inhumane treatment during these operations. In a press release, the Alliance stated that such use of force, reportedly carried out under direct orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs, violates the constitutional right of citizens to live.

The statement highlights that the scenes of abuse and arrests by security personnel while citizens attempted to protect their homes have raised serious questions about the state's role. The Alliance argues that since the Constitution of Nepal guarantees the right to live with dignity and ensures food, shelter, and clothing as fundamental rights, demolishing settlements without providing alternative arrangements is unconstitutional and a violation of human rights.

The Gen-Z Movement Alliance has accused the state of completely ignoring the mandatory requirement to provide fair compensation under Article 25 of the Constitution and the Land Acquisition Act, 2034, when acquiring private property in the name of various standards. It has drawn the government's attention to immediately stop the act of snatching away the shelter of citizens under the guise of development slogans and aesthetic beautification.

The Alliance has presented a five-point demand to the government, calling for an immediate halt to the bulldozer campaign in squatter settlements, the provision of safe alternative housing for those affected, and fair compensation for damaged property. Furthermore, the statement demands an investigation and action against security personnel who engaged in inhumane behavior and the authorities who issued the orders, while also calling for a long-term and just solution to the landless problem.

 The Alliance has also warned that such actions, which do not prioritize justice and humanity, will only increase distrust and dissatisfaction in society.
