Adult female rhino killed by army gunfire in Chitwan National Park

Chitwan. An adult female rhinoceros has died after being shot by the army in Chitwan National Park. According to the park's conservation officer and information officer, Abinash Thapamagar, the rhino was killed by gunfire discharged in self-defense after it attacked soldiers patrolling the park on Thursday.

A team deployed from the Seri security post under the Naya Gorakh Battalion, tasked with park security, was on patrol when they were suddenly attacked by a female rhino accompanied by a sub-adult calf. The rhino targeted one of the soldiers.

The park stated that after 14 rounds of warning shots failed to deter the animal, two additional rounds were fired to protect the soldier under attack, which struck the rhino. The approximately 24-year-old female rhino died at the scene.
