Man arrested after viral video shows assault on elderly man in Basantapur

Kathmandu. Police have arrested a man after a video went viral on social media showing him brutally assaulting an elderly person in Basantapur, Kathmandu. The arrested individual is 42-year-old Prakash Khatri, a resident of Chandragiri Municipality-10.

Khatri, who is involved in the assault, is a tourist guide. SP Pawan Bhattarai of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, told Ratopati that Khatri was arrested following the release of the video and a 5-day remand has been obtained to begin an investigation.

The elderly victim assaulted by Khatri is Ram Avatar Das. The victim, who has been living in Thamel for 37 years, is also a 'local tourist guide'.

Police are investigating the case under the charge of indecent behavior after obtaining a remand from the District Administration Office. Since both individuals are tourist guides, it is understood that the dispute arose over that matter.

Tourist guides working in the tourist areas of Kathmandu are affiliated with the 'Kathmandu Preservation Organization'. Membership in this organization is mandatory to become a local tourist guide.

However, Khatri had been raising objections, claiming that Ram Avatar Das was working as a guide without being affiliated with the organization. An officer involved in the investigation says, 'It appears that Khatri had been questioning the victim's affiliation and ID card for some time.'

Police investigation concludes that Khatri assaulted Das because he refused to join the 'Kathmandu Preservation Organization' and obtain an identity card. The police officer involved in the investigation states, 'It appears the dispute was over the issue of the tourist guide identity card and lack of affiliation with the organization.'

The Janasewa Police Circle is conducting the investigation into the accused.
