IPL 2026: Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad Face Off at Eden Gardens

Kolkata | What was the common thread in the first match of this Indian Premier League (IPL) season for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders? Both teams scored over 200 runs but were defeated as their weak bowling attacks failed to defend the target.

As Hyderabad and Kolkata face off at a venue like Eden Gardens, which is considered small and highly favorable for batting, the bowling attacks of both teams will once again be under scrutiny. Due to injuries and unavailability, Kolkata has started IPL 2026 without key players. 

It became clear when Mumbai Indians easily chased down a target of 221 runs, where bowlers like Blessing Muzarabani, Vaibhav Arora, and Kartik Tyagi could not make much of an impact. Furthermore, with Cameron Green not bowling and unlikely to bowl against Hyderabad, Kolkata's fast bowling appears to be one of the weakest in the tournament. 

But the problem does not end there. Their key spinners, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, who usually tie down the opposition, did not look very dangerous against Mumbai. Both will have to struggle hard to find their rhythm against Hyderabad's top-order batters who are excellent at hitting spin.

However, both Narine and Varun have excellent records at Eden Gardens. No other bowler has taken more wickets than Narine at this venue in T20 cricket, while Varun is in fourth place with 34 wickets in 24 matches. Will these key Kolkata bowlers find their wicket-taking rhythm upon returning to a familiar ground?

Hyderabad's bowling unit also has many problems, the main one being its one-dimensional nature. Jaydev Unadkat, David Payne, and Harshal Patel are all similar types of bowlers; they rely more on cutters and variations for success. Their key fast bowler Brydon Carse missed the first match due to injury and is unlikely to play against Kolkata.

Hyderabad surprised everyone by handing the new ball to Nitish Kumar Reddy instead of Ishan Malinga against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, while Malinga did not even bowl in the powerplay. Whether this was a one-time experiment or Hyderabad's regular strategy remains to be seen. However, they need to clarify their plans on this ground where a run-fest is expected.

Kolkata holds a 20-10 lead against Hyderabad in the IPL and has won 5 of their last 6 encounters. The last time these two teams met, in an inconsequential group match in Delhi, Hyderabad scored 278 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Before that, Kolkata had defeated Hyderabad by 80 runs in Kolkata.

Ajinkya Rahane, who walked off the field with a cramp during the match between Kolkata and Mumbai, is fit and expected to play against Hyderabad. Head coach Abhishek Nair is likely to continue with the out-of-form Varun, so no changes are expected in the team.

• Aniket Verma

Aniket Verma was a rising star for Hyderabad in IPL 2025, with an excellent strike rate of 166.19. Although he did not perform very well for Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (120 runs in 9 innings), it has not affected his IPL rhythm. 

He proved this by scoring 43 runs off 18 balls in the opening match of IPL 2026. In a team full of aggressive hitters, Aniket might be easily overlooked, but he is a very important part of Hyderabad's strong batting lineup.

• Finn Allen

If anyone had doubts about how Finn Allen would perform in his IPL debut, he immediately dispelled those doubts by smashing 37 runs off 17 balls against Mumbai. Allen is in the best form of his life. No one has scored more runs in T20s in 2026: 732 runs in 17 innings at an average of 48.80 and a strike rate of 193.13. 

He also has pleasant memories of Eden Gardens. In the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final held at this very ground, he demolished South Africa by scoring an unbeaten 100 off just 33 balls, where New Zealand chased down a target of 170 runs in just 12.5 overs. Kolkata is hoping for another such innings from Allen.

• Rahane is preparing to play his 200th IPL match; he will become the 11th player in the tournament to cross this milestone.
• He will need to be careful against Jaydev Unadkat, who has dismissed him 4 times in 6 IPL innings.
• Finn Allen holds the record for hitting the most sixes (52) in T20 cricket in 2026. Ishan Kishan is fifth on this list with 39 sixes.
• Klaasen's record against Narine and Chakravarthy in T20s is quite spectacular. He has never been dismissed by Narine in 8 T20 innings and has scored 85 runs off 52 balls at a strike rate of 163.46. Although Varun has dismissed him three times in 9 innings, Klaasen has smashed 112 runs off 53 balls against Varun at a strike rate of 211.32.

Pitch and Conditions

This match will be played on the same pitch as the World Cup semi-final between New Zealand and South Africa last month. This is a traditionally high-scoring pitch, which Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori described as having more grass than usual. 

He expects the pitch to hold the ball a bit rather than turn. The temperature is likely to be around 28 to 32 degrees Celsius.
