UN Secretary-General Urges Global Standards for Artificial Intelligence at New Panel's Inaugural Meeting

Kathmandu. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the newly formed international scientific panel on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to establish clear global policies, safety standards, and accountability frameworks.

Addressing the panel's inaugural meeting, he stated that Artificial Intelligence is developing at an unprecedented pace and is having a profound and long-term impact on the global economy, labor markets, education, health, communication, and governance systems.

He noted that because the overall impact of such rapidly changing technology cannot be understood by any single country, company, or research institution, global cooperation and the building of a shared understanding based on scientific evidence are essential.

According to Secretary-General Guterres, Artificial Intelligence creates both opportunities and challenges in areas ranging from peace and security to human rights and sustainable development. While it can increase productivity, foster innovation, and expand access to services, he warned of the risks of misuse, the spread of misinformation, privacy violations, and increased inequality. Therefore, he emphasized that the use of this technology must be safe, transparent, inclusive, and human-centered.

The newly formed panel is expected to provide credible advice and recommendations to the global community based on independent and impartial scientific assessments. Panel members will act in their individual capacities and are mandated to conduct research and analysis independently, free from the influence of any government, private sector, or other entity. They will prepare recommendations regarding the development of Artificial Intelligence, risk management, ethical standards, and potential frameworks for international cooperation.

The United Nations General Assembly established this 40-member panel, whose members will serve a three-year term. The Secretary-General described this initiative as a historic opportunity to ensure the use of technology for the benefit of humanity and urged all countries to participate actively.
