Janakpur Becomes Center of Devotion as Mithila Madhyamiki Parikrama Concludes

Janakpur. Janakpurdham, the heart of Mithila, has become a center of devotion and reverence. The Madhyamiki Yatra, which begins near the Ashram of Rishi Pundrak near Sitamarhi, the birthplace of Janakiji, is not just a physical pilgrimage but also a profound spiritual experience.

According to devout pilgrims, this circumambulation grants success and mental peace in life. Tracing the history of the circumambulation, it is found that its inception followed the concept of the circumambulations of Ayodhya and Vrindavan. Specifically, it was organized systematically in 2016 BS by Mauni Baba who came from Ayodhya.

It has now been established as a historical and cultural heritage. Devotees compare this circumambulation to the first revered status attained by Lord Ganesha after circumambulating his parents (Shankar and Parvati). This also highlights the importance of mother and father in society. Thus, the Mithila Madhyamiki Parikrama conveys a message of religious tolerance, cultural unity, and personal spiritual purification.

Thousands of devotees from various parts of Nepal and India come to participate in this 5-day journey. The Mithila Madhyama Parikrama is believed to have started in the eighteenth century. The circumambulation concluded on the 15th day upon reaching Janakpurdham and completing the Antargriha Parikrama. Following this, the tradition of celebrating the Holi festival begins in the Mithilanchal region.

It is a popular belief that participating in the circumambulation with mind, speech, and action destroys numerous sins and injustices, fulfills desires, and leads to salvation.
