Manchester United Edges Crystal Palace to Claim Third Spot in Premier League After Controversial Red Card and Penalty

London. Amidst controversial red card and penalty decisions, Manchester United defeated a 10-man Crystal Palace to seize third place in the English Premier League. United secured the victory after coming back from an initial deficit in the match held at Old Trafford.

Palace took the lead in the fourth minute with a goal from Malian Lassina Traoré, putting United under pressure. A dramatic turn occurred in the second half when Traoré fouled United's Matheus Cunha.

Although the initial tackle was outside the box, Traoré held onto Cunha until inside the penalty area. With the assistance of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the main referee, Chris Kavanagh, upheld the penalty decision and sent Traoré off with a red card.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Bruno Fernandes scored the equalizer from the penalty spot in the 57th minute. Eight minutes later, Benjamin Sesko secured the United victory with a powerful header from a Fernandes cross.

Sesko has maintained his excellent form, scoring seven goals in his last eight matches. The goal difference could have been wider had former United goalkeeper Dean Henderson not made some excellent saves.

With this win, United, under the leadership of manager Michael Carrick, has achieved an excellent record of six wins and one draw in seven matches. United has managed to climb to third place in the table for the first time since 2023, surpassing Aston Villa on goal difference.

The defeated Crystal Palace remains in 14th place in the table. Palace, holding a safe 10-point lead over the relegation zone, now appears set to focus its attention on the Conference League and European qualification spots.
