National Human Rights Commission Expresses Concern Over Security and Code of Conduct Violations Ahead of Upcoming Elections

Kathmandu. As the date for the House of Representatives election on Falgun 21 approaches, the National Human Rights Commission has expressed serious concern over the country's security situation and incidents of election code of conduct violations. Commission Spokesperson Dr. Tika Ram Pokhrel, in a statement, informed that monitoring before the election has been intensified across the country.

The Commission concludes that the recent disputes between political party cadres and various groups in districts including Dang, Rautahat, and Parsa, which necessitated the imposition of curfews, have added a major challenge to peace and security. The Commission warned that the undignified and hateful expressions targeted by political leaders and candidates against each other could disrupt the election environment. Stating that such expressions could also disturb social and cultural harmony, all parties have been urged to exercise patience and restraint.

The Commission has specifically directed an immediate halt to the observed use of children, directly or indirectly, in election campaigning and political activities. The statement mentioned that involving children in promotional materials on social media is a serious violation of the code of conduct.

The Commission clarified that political parties, civil society, schools, and parents all share equal responsibility in making the election peaceful, fear-free, and human rights-friendly. Addressing the government and all concerned parties, the Commission called for an end to activities that affect peace and security and demanded respect for citizens' human rights.

Warning against engaging in or causing any undesirable activities, the Commission emphasized the crucial role of everyone in conducting the upcoming election in accordance with democratic values and norms.
