Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Life in Upper Mustang, Roads Blocked

Mustang. Life in Upper Mustang has been affected due to heavy snowfall since Tuesday night. This is the third snowfall in Upper Mustang this year. The District Administration Office, Mustang, stated that more than two feet of snow fell in Lomanthang and Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality of Upper Mustang.

Similarly, it has snowed along with rain in Lower Mustang. Heavy snowfall occurred in settlements and high altitudes in Lomanthang and Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality of Upper Mustang. Salina Nepali, an employee at ACAP Lomanthang, said that two feet of snow fell in the settlement of Lomanthang itself.

“Life here is very difficult due to the heavy snowfall; it is impossible to go outside as thick snow has accumulated inside the settlement,” employee Nepali said, “All household water taps are frozen, and we have to boil snow water to cook food. Herders and local residents are facing significant problems.”

Armed Police Inspector Suraj Shrestha informed that the risk of traditional houses collapsing or leaking has increased as thick snow has piled up on the roofs of local residents' homes due to the heavy snowfall. According to Armed Police Inspector Shrestha, a team of security personnel from the BOP (Border Out Post) stationed at Lomanthang-2 Nhechung Chhosing in Korala provided assistance by clearing accumulated snow from the roofs of some local houses.

Furthermore, the District Police Office, Mustang, reported that the Jomsom-Korala road and the Kagbeni-Muktinath road sections are completely blocked due to the heavy snowfall on Tuesday night. Deputy Superintendent of Police Chhiring Kipa Lama informed that dozens of vehicles have been stranded in Kagbeni, Mustang, as the roads were blocked by the snowfall.

Meanwhile, the District Administration Office, Mustang, issued a notice urging travelers to exercise extreme caution due to the risk associated with travel during the snowfall. Tourists have been requested not to travel to or organize travel to locations such as the Korala road, Muktinath road, Mustang-Dolpa road, Manang-Mustang trekking route, Manang-Mustang Saribung trekking route, Mustang-Manang Mesokundo trekking route, and the Dhampus Peak trekking route under the Dhaulagiri trekking route, effective immediately.
