Nepali Congress President Uses Banned Facebook
During the government's ban on social media, the President of the ruling Nepali Congress party, Sher Bahadur Deuba, posted on the banned platform Facebook. He shared pictures from a speech he gave in Sunsari district. This action has drawn public attention because it occurred while access to the platform is officially restricted for most citizens.
Kathmandu Mayor Mocks Deuba with VPN Question
In response to Mr. Deuba's post, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah left a mocking comment. He sarcastically asked which Virtual Private Network (VPN) Mr. Deuba used to access Facebook. Mayor Shah wrote, "Which VPN is this post from? Nepali or foreign? It must be very difficult to operate from a VPN."
Ruling Party's Official Stance on the Ban
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress party itself has taken a formal position against the government's decision. Following a meeting of its central executive committee, party leader Bal Bahadur KC stated their official view. The party has decided that the government should not strictly enforce the social media ban until a proper law is made in line with a Supreme Court order. They believe the government should understand the Supreme Court's directive and not be rigid in its decision until the necessary legislation is passed.
