Mayor Bhattarai Begins Indefinite Hunger Strike Demending Federal Law Amendment

Kathmandu – Tirtharaj Bhattarai, Mayor of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality in Khotang, has started an indefinite hunger strike at Maitighar Mandala from Wednesday morning. The protest aims to push for amendments to federal laws that currently restrict the use of local raw materials in development projects.

Key Demands of the Protest

Bhattarai argues that existing federal laws create unnecessary barriers for local governments seeking to utilize indigenous resources. His hunger strike highlights the need for policy reforms to promote self-reliant communities and sustainable development.

Symbolic Start to the Movement

The mayor began his protest after shaving his head and wearing white clothes, a traditional gesture of serious resolve. He displayed placards with slogans such as:

  • "No Money? Give Us Policy – Let’s Build a Self-Reliant Society"

  • "Stop Nature’s Destruction, Focus on Conservation"

  • "Climate Change Impact: Uncontrolled River Erosion"

  • "Worship Nature, Protect Biodiversity"

Purpose Behind the Hunger Strike

Bhattarai’s demonstration seeks to draw attention to how bureaucratic hurdles in federal laws hinder local governance and environmental protection. By advocating for legal amendments, he hopes to empower municipalities to make better use of natural resources while addressing climate challenges.

The hunger strike will continue until the government responds to his demands. Supporters and activists are expected to join the movement in the coming days.
