Kathmandu, February 11 — Rashtriya Swatantra Party MP Shishir Khanal has questioned Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak after Nepal Police, under his ministry’s command, failed to ensure the security of its own personnel.
Speaking at the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Khanal questioned how the Home Minister could continue holding his position in such circumstances.
He stated, "The police didn't even have the courage to investigate the leader from the Amrit Science Campus who assaulted a duty officer. As a representative of that area, many students have messaged me about how the campus has been controlled by their hooliganism. But now, with the police too afraid, how can there be a proper learning environment in the campus?"
Khanal also criticized the government for its selective approach in handling student organizations.
He questioned the government's lack of action against student leaders associated with the ruling party, stating, "When police avoid investigating the supporters of the ruling parties, the situation becomes concerning. Yet, people like Ashika Tamang are arrested with handcuffs for just minor incidents."
He further highlighted the disparity in the treatment of youth in the country, stating, "While leaders express concern about youth leaving the country, their actions convey a message that only those supporting the ruling alliance are safe in Nepal."
Khanal also addressed the issue of security, questioning how the Home Minister, who commands the police, could not ensure safety.
He asked, "If you cannot provide security through the police, why would young people want to stay in Nepal? Are they just here to vote?"
