Chitwan, February 10 — General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Thapa, has stated that the bill to regulate social media will not be passed in its current form.
He pointed out that the provisions in the bill have issues, and therefore, it cannot be passed exactly as it is.
While in Chitwan on Monday, General Secretary Thapa emphasized that the bill could not be passed in its current form due to the issues and errors within its provisions, which need to be amended.
"The social media bill will not be passed exactly as it is, nor should it be. There are many problems with the bill, and its provisions are flawed," he said.
"The bill was wrong in 2019, it was wrong in 2024, and it is still wrong in 2025. Therefore, it needs to be discussed and amended."
He further mentioned that the bill can only be passed after discussions with the government’s partner, the CPN (UML).
He stressed the importance of having a shared understanding between the Congress and UML on the issue of regulating social media.
He also noted that the Congress would coordinate with other parties to discuss the matter.
