18 years of CPA: Prachanda highlights CPA's role in establishing federal republic
Kathmandu, November 20 — Former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda stated that the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the Nepal government and the then rebel CPN (Maoist), laid the foundation for Nepal's Constituent Assembly, federal democratic republic, and inclusive democracy.
In a video statement released on the 18th anniversary of CPA, he reflected on the historic agreement, which ended the decade-long armed conflict and led to the downfall of the 240-year-old monarchy. Prachanda expressed happiness over the completion of key milestones in the peace process, particularly the conclusion of tasks during his leadership.
Prachanda highlighted that the 12-point agreement signed between the seven-party alliance and the Maoists in 2005 paved the way for the peace process, followed by the 2006 people's movement, which was instrumental in abolishing the monarchy.
The signing of the CPA on November 21, 2006, was a significant step in establishing the new political framework for Nepal. Prachanda also paid tribute to the martyrs who lost their lives in the various movements that led to the establishment of a federal republic in Nepal. He acknowledged the sacrifices of the disappeared fighters and wished good health for the wounded.
However, Prachanda also noted that the expectations of the Nepali people for development and prosperity, through the establishment of a federal democratic republic, have not yet been fully met, leading to dissatisfaction among the public.
He emphasized the need for further amendments to the Constitution to ensure better governance, social justice, and prosperity, aligning with the people's aspirations. Prachanda called on political parties, civil society, and the general public to unite and work together to achieve these goals. He expressed gratitude to all those who have contributed to peace efforts and appealed for their continued commitment to fulfill the expectations of the people.
