Opposition urge President Paudel to reject party split ordinance
Kathmandu, October 23 — Opposition parties in Parliament met with President Ramchandra Paudel to draw attention to the ordinance related to party split that the government is about to introduce. Key leaders, including the leader of the main opposition party, Prachanda, visited the President's residence, Shital Niwas, on Wednesday afternoon to raise these concerns.
The opposition parties also briefed the President on the 13-point memorandum they had previously submitted to Prime Minister KP Oli. Shakti Basnet, a member of the task force and Deputy General Secretary of the Maoist Center, informed that they highlighted issues such as the government's negligence in disaster management and its focus on party division at a time when both the ruling and opposition parties should be working together to resolve national issues.
"We briefed the President on the government's performance over the past hundred days and the memorandum submitted by the opposition parties. At a time when both sides should unite to face the national crisis, the government seems intent on party division, which undermines democracy. We also discussed the government's apathy towards disaster management," Basnet told Ratopati.
In response, President Paudel stated that he would operate within the duties prescribed by the constitution as the head of state. He expressed his commitment to strengthening and reinforcing democracy, as reported by Basnet.
Participants in the meeting included Prachanda and Basnet from the Maoist party, Madhav Nepal and Rajendra Pandey from the Unified Socialist Party, Sumana Shrestha and Shisir Khanal from the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Buddhi Man Tamang and Hemjang Gurung from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and Tilak Thapa Magar from the Aam Janata Party.
