Monsoon-induced disasters: 218 dead, 27 still missing

Kathmandu, October 1 —  Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak informed that 218 people have died, 27 are missing, and 143 are injured due to the recent floods and landslides. He emphasized that the government is prioritizing disaster response efforts.

During today’s meeting of the House of Representatives' State Affairs and Good Governance Committee, he stated that the government is focused on search, rescue, and relief for affected citizens.

Lekhak informed that the government is also concentrating on providing free medical treatment for the injured and reopening main and secondary highways blocked by landslides to facilitate transportation.

“Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and relief material distribution is also in progress. Free treatment for the injured is being provided at government hospitals. The District Disaster Management Committees are actively working to make relief distribution and rehabilitation effective,” he said.

During the meeting, the Home Minister confirmed the casualties and mentioned that the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and volunteers have rescued 4,022 individuals stranded by the disaster. He noted that the Kathmandu Valley and Bagmati Province were the most affected, with heavy rainfall witnessed for the first time in fifty years.

He also detailed the involvement of 3,906 personnel from the Nepal Army, 14,802 from the Nepal Police, and 12,023 from the Armed Police in the ongoing search and rescue operations.
