SC directs govt to compensate jail birds for overstay in prison

Kathmandu -  The Supreme Court (SC) had ordered the government to give Rs 300 per day in compensation to the persons forced for overstay in jail due to the SC's own verdict.
For the first time in the judicial history, the joint bench of Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli and Justice Kedar Prasad Chalise issued such directive, SC's Press Expert Kishor Poudel shared.
The SC has issued a mandamus in the name of the Office of the Prime Minister and Office of the Council of Ministers to provide Rs 600,000 in compensation to Padam Maya Gurung of Dhankuta for her overstay in jail. It is said that Gurung stayed for five years six months more in jail.
According to Poudel this has been established as precedent and other persons of such case would also get compensation.
