Final phase of Melamchi Drinking Water Project repair nears completion

SINDHUPALCHOK: The restoration efforts for the Melamchi drinking water project are in the final stages, with repair work nearing completion. The devastating flood that occurred in the Melamchi river in June 2021 inflicted severe damage to the project's estuary area.
According to Padam Bahadur Kunwar, the senior engineer overseeing the project, approximately 70 percent of the repair work in the estuary area has been successfully executed.
On Wednesday, a delegation of key stakeholders conducted an on-site assessment of the ongoing work at the source of the Melamchi water supply project in Helambu municipality-1.
Senior Engineer Kunwar stated that efforts are underway to ensure the diversion of water aligns with the government's specified targets. Member of Parliament Amresh Kumar Singh, part of the delegation, emphasized the government's responsibility to prioritize the Melamchi drinking water project and ensure year-round water supply to the residents of Kathmandu.
Suresh Acharya, the Secretary at the Ministry of Water Supply, affirmed that the maintenance work is being diligently carried out to establish a sustainable water supply to Kathmandu.
The delegation included prominent figures such as Balananda Paudel, Chair of the National Natural Resources and Fiscal Commission, Judda Gurung, Fiscal Commission member, Kamalraj Shrestha, Director General of the Department of Water Supply, and Zakki Ahmed Ansari, Executive Director of the Melamchi Water Supply Development Board.
