TU to increase engineering fee from 330,000 to 777,000

KATHMANDU, July 27: Tribhuwan University's Institute of Engineering Studies (IOE) has proceeded with the plan to increase the fees for engineering subjects.

IOE Dean Prof Dr. Shasidhar Ram Joshi remarked that the increment of the fees is in consideration. He informed that no concrete decision has been made on this issue yet.

"We have been exercising. We have formed a research committee and are looking at the reports. We are discussing with the teachers, staff, faculty union, students' union and everyone", he said.

IOE has been charging Rs 333,000 as an engineering fee for undergraduates. It is going to be increased to Rs 770,000. The IOE has formed a committee under the chairmanship of Sushil Brjacharya for this issue.

The committee is researching all 5 campuses under IOE. The fee will be increased on the same basis.

Earlier this fee was fixed in the year 2053. After that, the fee would increase at the rate of 10 percent every year. However, the fee has not been increased so far.

IOE is finally going to increase the fee after 27 years. Although the fee was to be increased by 10% every year, it has not been put into practice. IOE has been doing homework on this issue for a year and has been discussing with the stakeholders, he informed.

Dean Joshi stated that the colleges couldn't be run without increasing the fees as Tribhuwan University says it can't provide its budget to IOE.

There are currently 5 private colleges under IOE. They are  Pulchowk Engineering College, Purbanchal College, Paschimanchal College, Thapathali College and Chitwan College. 10 private colleges affiliated with the IOE have also been conducting undergraduate and postgraduate educational programs in engineering.
