NC General Convention: Run-off for president begins

Deuba and Koirala in race for NC presidency

KATHMANDU: Second round of voting for the presidential position of the Nepali Congress (NC) began at the City Hall in the capital on Tuesday.

As none of the five candidates --- Deuba, Dr Shekhar Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, Bimalendra Nidhi and Kalyan Gurung-- failed to secure more than 50 percent of the total votes cast on Monday, a re-vote between Deuba and Shekhar is being held as per the party statute. Deuba secured 2,258 of the 4,679 votes cast. His nearest contender Koirala won a total of 1,702 votes, according to the party’s election committee.

A candidate was required to secure at least 2,340 votes to be elected as party president.

While Singh was voted by 371 delegates, Nidhi and Gurung got 250 and 22 votes respectively.
