After boycotting benches for eight days, SC justices to hear habeas corpus writ petitions
KATHMANDU: Justices of the Supreme Court (SC), who boycotted all the benches assigned to them for eight days until Sunday, decided to hear the habeas corpus writ petitions.
A meeting of the justices held on Monday morning decided to this effect.
One of the ‘agitating’ justices said that they would conduct hearings on the cases seeking the habeas corpus writs as the benches were formed as demanded by them.
Following their decision, the benches relating to habeas corpus writs resumed from Monday afternoon itself.
The justices have been demanding that Chief Justice (CJ) Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana step down and give a way out to judicial reforms.
CJ Rana was embroiled with controversies after he reportedly demanded a share in the incumbent Cabinet. Gajendra Hamal, a non-parliamentarian, was appointed the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies on ‘CJ’s quota’. Hamal, a Congress leader, however, stepped down as the minister after questions were raised over his ‘controversial appointment’.
