Govt spends Rs 5.177 billion  for ‘corona prevention’

KATHMANDU, May 25:  The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has shared that the government has so far  spent Rs 5,177,283,000  for the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). 

According to the ministry, the amount was spent on procuring RT-PCR kits, extraction kits, viral transport media (VTM), antigen kits, masks, gowns, surgical gloves, oxygen system reinforcement, ICUs and other medical equipment. Similarly, an additional amount was spent on various activities that were carried out for the prevention and control of COVID-19 including risk allowance to health workers, free testing and treatment, purchase of vaccines and various drives.

Minister for Health and Population, Hridayesh Tripathi said that Rs14 billion has been allocated for the purpose of vaccine procurement, and COVID-19 prevention and treatment. According to Tripathi, an amount of Rs 2.545 billion, however, is yet to be settled for vaccination campating and high dependency units (HDUs). 

Health Minister hints at enforcing health emergency 

Speaking at a program on Monday, Minister Tripathi hinted at imposing a health emergency in view of the worsening health crisis triggered by the second wave of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19. 

Minister Tripathi said the government is holding a series of discussions with people of various sectors on the implementation of the health crisis as  the second wave of the corona epidemic is ravaging at its worst. 

Ministry Secretary Laxman Aryal said that the government will take necessary decisions based on the suggestions received from  public health experts.

“Despite the political turmoil in the country, the health ministry is constantly fighting against the pandemic,” said Minister Tripathi, adding that the government is negotiating with the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia and other countries regarding the procurement of vaccines against corona
