Madhesh Province Chief Calls for Separate Human Rights Law

Janakpurdham. Madhesh Province Chief Surendra Labh Karna has pointed out the need for the provincial government to bring a separate human rights law for the effective protection of human rights.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Madhesh Province Human Rights Conference, which began today in Janakpurdham, organized jointly by organizations including the Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC), Sabal Nepal, and Mukti Nepal, he stated that civil society, civil leaders, and the state must all move forward together to build an egalitarian society.

Province Chief Karna said that even as the world is making rapid strides in technology, it is today's need to discourage incidents of caste discrimination and violence against women seen in Nepali society. He expressed the expectation that the provincial government would create a solid legal basis for the protection of human rights and that the conference would provide necessary policies and suggestions to the government.

Madhesh Province Minister for Labor and Transport, Sharda Thapa, said that the campaign for human rights will continue as long as every citizen is not safe and capable. Member of Parliament Ganesh Bishwakarma expressed the view that the state should prioritize addressing problems such as discrimination against Dalits, violence against women, Harawa-Charawa, and landless people.

Former member of the National Human Rights Commission, Sushil Pyakurel, mentioned that it is the state's responsibility to protect the rights of citizens. The organizers informed that human rights activists from all eight districts of Madhesh Province participated in the conference.
