Army Deployed in Sunsari After Protesters Violate Curfew, Engage in Arson and Vandalism

Biratnagar. The Nepali Army has been deployed in Devanaganj Rural Municipality-3, Kaptainganj, Sunsari, after protesters violated prohibitory orders and curfew orders and resorted to arson and vandalism.

Following the death of a 24-year-old youth from a security forces' bullet and injuries to nine people in a violent clash between two groups on Sunday night, the District Administration Office, Sunsari, had issued an indefinite curfew in various areas starting Monday morning due to the ensuing tension.

Despite the curfew, thousands of protesters took to the streets on Monday morning, burning tires and engaging in vandalism and arson, leading to the situation going out of control. The protesters vandalized and set fire to five shops in the Kaptainganj area and also obstructed the East-West Highway.

Chief of the District Administration Office, Sunsari, Basudev Ghimire, stated that the Nepali Army was deployed with armored vehicles after the efforts of the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force to control the growing crowd failed, and efforts are currently underway to strengthen security presence and bring the situation under control.
