Snakebite major health concern among floods survivors of Saptari

Rajbiraj - Many people have fallen victims to snakebites in Saptari, a district in the eastern Terai, in the aftermath of floods which severely affected the life.

Snakes which are believed to have lost their habitats in the flooding have been spotted in settlements in a large number. Chandan Yadav of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality-14 believed that floods forced snakes including poisonous ones out of their hideouts.

People of Rampura Malhaniya, Sakarpura, Mainakaderi and Tilathi, the areas suffering worst in the flood, are at a high risk of snakebites.

The Rajbiraj-based Gajendra Narayan Singh Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital, the sole government facility throughout the district, reported that since the past three to four days, some 20-30 people have been visiting the hospital daily, seeking treatment for snakebites and due to this the hospital is facing a problem of mange beds to them.

The traumatic floods survivors shared that the post-disaster life was torturous.

Krait, cobra and some other types of snake have now been massively found in the floods-hit areas, according to Sanjay Chaudhary of Rajbiraj-4.

However, the District Public Health Office says that it has a sufficient stock of anti-venom used for snakebite treatment.
