Renovation of Gokarneswar Mahadev temple begins

Kathmandu– Renovation of the Gokarneswar Mahadev temple including to replace its roof has begun. The three-storey Pagoda style temple was built during the Lichchavi period and is regarded as very important from the historical, religious, cultural and archaeological point of view.

The renovation is being carried out under the leadership of the Department of Archaeology at an estimated cost of Rs. 100 million, according to chair of Gokarneswar municipality-4 Srikumar Shrestha. The temple will have a gold plated roof.

The locals have also collected Rs. 30 million from a Shreemad Bhagwat Mahayagya organized last year, while the municipality has allocated Rs.

10 million for the same. The replacement of the roof alone will cost Rs. 170 million, said the roof reconstruction committee coordinator Komal Bahadur Bista. The temple draws a huge crowd on Bhadra Krishna Aunsi or father's day while a religious fair is also organised on the day. ---
