Former PM Bhattarai Warns Against Federalism Dismantling

Kathmandu. Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has stated that if the ruling party RSP decides to abolish the provincial assembly through its general convention and thereby dismantle federalism, it would be a big mistake.

On social media, he said, "From a legal perspective, if on one hand a task force is formed to prepare a 'Constitution Amendment Working Paper' by the government led by oneself, and on the other hand, one's own unilateral decision is imposed on others, it will create a great crisis of trust among parties, various ethnic groups, and the general public, and it can push the country towards disaster."

He further said, "In a country like ours with ethnic, national, and regional diversity, if the federal restructuring of the old unitary state, done with maximum consensus by the elected Constituent Assembly after a long, sacrificial struggle, is dismantled knowingly or unknowingly, it will create serious ethnic-regional conflict and unrest. Which will not be in anyone's interest. Therefore, instead of 'causing pain to an uninjured head by tying a rope', it would be wise to remain silent and focus on good governance and development until maximum national consensus is built on constitutional amendment.
