Indian Billionaire Gautam Adani Agrees to Pay Millions in US Corruption Lawsuit Settlement

Kathmandu. Indian billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani has agreed to pay millions of dollars in fines to resolve the civil corruption lawsuit filed in the United States. This settlement, reached without admitting guilt in the high-profile case pending in a US court, is seen as a significant turning point in the financial and legal disputes that have long plagued the Adani Group.

In an indictment filed in November 2024 in New York, Adani and some of his close associates were accused of intentionally misleading international investors. US prosecutors claimed that efforts were made to influence Indian officials through a large-scale bribery scheme to secure solar energy supply contracts.

According to the indictment, Adani was accused of involvement in a bribery scheme worth approximately 250 million US dollars. The US side claimed that this scheme was intended to secure lucrative energy contracts.

According to a letter sent by Adani Green Energy to the Mumbai Stock Exchange, Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani have jointly agreed to pay a 'civil penalty' of 18 million US dollars. The company clarified that this settlement was reached 'without admitting or denying the allegations'.

The letter also stated that Adani Green Energy itself is not a direct party to this case and that no formal charges have been filed against the company. It was also informed that the final order from the US court is still pending.

Meanwhile, news reports from The New York Times on Thursday indicated that US prosecutors are preparing to withdraw some of the charges filed against Adani. According to that report, the situation took a new turn after Adani appointed a new legal team led by Robert Giuffra, one of US President Donald Trump's private lawyers.

Gautam Adani has been consistently in the international business spotlight in recent years. The business expansion of the Adani Group, which spans coal, ports, airports, cement, energy, and media, has made him one of India's most powerful industrialists.

However, during the same period, the group has also faced allegations related to corporate transparency, share trading, and financial irregularities. Following some international investigation reports, the share prices of Adani Group companies experienced a sharp decline, which generated significant interest and debate among global investors.

Adani, who is rumored to have a close relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was born into a middle-class family in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Growing up amidst financial struggles, he dropped out of school at the age of 16.

Later, he moved to Mumbai, India's financial hub, in search of employment. In Mumbai, he initially worked in the gem and diamond trading sector. He then gained business experience by working for a short period in his elder brother's plastics business.

In 1988, he formally began his business journey with an export trading business. That business later expanded and developed into the Adani Group.

A decisive turning point in his business life came in 1995. At that time, his group secured a major contract for the construction and operation of a commercial port in Gujarat under the private sector. Since then, the Adani Group has rapidly expanded into infrastructure, energy, and international trade, establishing its position as a leading industrial group in India.
