Localities in Gorkha Decide to Continue Sunday Classes Despite Federal Holiday Announcement

Pokhara. The federal government has announced public holidays on Saturday and Sunday. However, citing that the academic calendar would not be completed, local levels in Gorkha decided to start admissions and classes before the time set by the federal government. Local levels have the right to education up to the secondary level. Gorkha Municipality, using that right, decided to teach on Sunday as well.

The municipality has now backed down from its decision after the Center for Education and Human Resource Development pressured it to implement the decision to give two days off per week. The Center, through a letter on Tuesday, had directed all local levels and schools to implement the two-day holiday announced by the federal government.

The municipal executive meeting held on Jestha 25 had decided to operate private and community schools within the municipality on Sundays as well. Rahamtulla Miyan, coordinator of the Municipal Education Committee, said that the decision to operate schools was made because not enough credit hours would be met according to the curriculum if Sunday was a holiday.

The municipality had prepared to conduct extra classes in schools on Sundays and provide separate remuneration to teachers for it. The municipality itself has stated that it is unable to stick to the decision to teach on Sundays following the directive from the Education Development Center.
