How to distinguish between a genuine and a fake smile

Kathmandu. In our daily lives, we meet many people. Some are genuinely happy to see us, while others smile out of formality or for a specific purpose.

In such situations, it can be difficult to tell whether another person's smile is genuine or just an act. If you want to understand the difference between a real and a fake smile, these simple physical cues can prove useful:

• Eye expression

It is said that the eyes never lie. When it comes to smiling, this is entirely true. A genuine smile is not limited to the lips; it reaches the eyes. When a person smiles out of true happiness, the corners of their eyes crinkle or wrinkle. However, if the smile is fake, the eyes remain completely calm and expressionless even if the lips are pulled toward the ears.

• Timing of the smile

A real smile appears on the face gradually and fades away slowly. It takes time for genuine happiness to disappear from the face. In contrast, a fake smile appears suddenly and vanishes before you can even blink, without any emotion. It turns on and off quickly, like a light switch.

• Pay attention to the cheeks

When we smile from the heart, our facial muscles work naturally. In this process, our cheeks lift upward and our eyes become smaller. But when someone tries to force a smile, there is no significant movement in the cheeks. They simply stretch their lips and pretend to smile.

• Facial symmetry

Psychologists say we have no control over our true emotions. When smiling genuinely, both sides of the face react simultaneously and symmetrically. However, when a smile is fake or forced, it often looks tilted to one side of the face or appears awkward. This means the face looks slightly asymmetrical when smiling this way.

• Visibility of lower teeth

When a person laughs openly and from the heart, both their upper and lower teeth are usually visible. However, when someone is smiling only for show, they often reveal only their upper teeth or try to give a tight-lipped smile.

Next time you meet someone and they smile at you, do not just look at their lips; read their eyes and facial expressions as well. By paying attention to these small details, you can easily distinguish between a real and a fake smile.
