MP Ranjit Karna Criticizes Government Management for Nagdhunga Tunnel Delay

Kathmandu. MP Ranjit Karna has stated that the failure to bring the Nagdhunga tunnel route into operation even after its construction is complete is a weakness of government management. Speaking at a meeting of the Public Policy and Delegated Legislation Committee, Karna mentioned that the project has been stalled because the process of finding a team for operation was initiated only after construction was completed.

"The tunnel route was ready a year ago, but the public has not been able to use it yet," Karna said. "Looking for an operation and maintenance team only after construction is completed shows the government's lack of foresight. This work should have been done a year ago."

He stated that delays in site clearance and EIA processes in Nepal's large projects add a significant financial burden to the country. Presenting the fact that the cost increase due to the Melamchi project being 27 years late could have built a tunnel and an airport in Sydney, he suggested establishing a precedent for completing work on time. 

He emphasized the need to stop irregularities such as awarding railway contracts without land acquisition.
