Nepal Achieves Significant Carbon Emission Reduction in Terai Arc Landscape

Kathmandu. Nepal has achieved major success in mitigating the impacts of climate change through the emission reduction program operating in the Terai Arc Landscape.

The REDD Implementation Centre under the Ministry of Forests and Environment has officially submitted the second monitoring report of the emission reduction program being implemented under the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility to the World Bank.

According to this report, which covers the three-year period from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2024, Nepal has successfully reduced emissions equivalent to 2,624,349 tons of carbon dioxide.

'This achievement is proof of Nepal's commitment and progress in sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation,' says Namraj Pudasaini, Chief of the REDD Implementation Centre and Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Forests and Environment.

This program has played a significant role in reducing carbon levels in the atmosphere by improving the status and sustainable management of forests in the Terai region. This emission reduction, achieved through the conservation of forest areas, has paved the way for Nepal to receive additional foreign assistance.

Previously, based on the first monitoring report, Nepal received a payment of 1.33 billion rupees from the World Bank in 2025. Pudasaini stated that the success of the second report reaffirms that forest conservation can contribute to the country's economy.

'The result of this emission reduction achieved in the Terai Arc Landscape is the outcome of Nepal's continuous efforts in sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation. We have not only conserved forest areas but also made them a part of the solution to the global problem of climate change,' he said.

According to Pudasaini, this program has succeeded in stopping deforestation and forest degradation through the active participation of community forest user groups and local residents in the Terai.

Operated under the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility, this program has been helping to strengthen local ecosystems while reducing carbon emissions.
