UN Secretary-General Warns Against Disregard for International Law

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the disregard for international law is eroding global trust, emphasizing that complying with rulings issued by the International Court of Justice is a binding obligation under the UN Charter.

In a statement issued on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the International Court of Justice, Guterres stated that the court has played a central role in shaping the modern international judicial system over the past eight decades.

Highlighting the authority and independence of the court, he emphasized the need for a renewed commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes and adherence to judicial decisions.

Guterres pointed to the rapid increase in violations of international law, citing military actions that escalate armed conflicts, breach rules, and the failure to uphold the UN's humanitarian and security responsibilities. Meanwhile, he warned that institutions tasked with maintaining justice are facing growing skepticism and challenges.

He stated that attempts to replace the rule of law with the law of force will lead to increased conflict and global instability.
