Nepal Celebrates Mother's Day with Reverence and Tradition

Kathmandu. The festival of 'Aama ko Mukh Herne' (Mother's Day), celebrated annually on the day of Baisakh Krishna Aunsi to honor mothers, is being observed across the country today with children offering their mothers delicious food and expressing deep devotion.

According to classical tradition, this day is regarded as an opportunity to show respect, devotion, and honor to the mother, who is considered superior to teachers, preceptors, and fathers in the scriptures, and to receive her blessings.

It is customary for children to wake up early, bathe, dress their mothers in fine clothes, and offer them nutritious food to receive their blessings. Those whose mothers have passed away perform Tarpan, Pinda, and offer food to priests, remembering their late mothers and their great sacrifices.

Religious scholar and member of the Nepal Calendar Determination Development Committee, Prof. Dr. Devmani Bhattarai, states that Vedic scriptures emphasize the importance of the mother and the motherland, citing the phrase 'Janani Janmabhumishcha Swargadapi Gariyasi,' meaning the mother and the motherland are greater and dearer than heaven.

He noted that the mother holds greater significance than anyone else because she carries the child in her womb for nine months and gives life. Scriptures mention that a mother's importance is a thousand times greater than a father's. Given this significance, living mothers are honored by being given good food and clothing to make them happy.

For deceased mothers, Tarpan, Pinda-daan, and Sida-daan are performed with devotion. Scholar Bhattarai explained that it is a classical belief that on Baisakh Krishna Aunsi, deceased mothers expect these offerings, and performing Shraddha brings them peace and leads them to bestow blessings.

On this occasion, a fair is held at Matatirtha in Chandragiri Municipality. Mayor Ghanshyam Giri informed that all preparations for the fair at Matatirtha have been completed.
