Foreign National Detained at Kathmandu Airport Attempting to Smuggle Large Sum of Foreign Currency

Kathmandu. Police have detained a foreign national at Tribhuvan International Airport during security checks for attempting to smuggle a large amount of illegal foreign currency. The 51-year-old Swedish citizen, Kunchok Khandro, was arrested Tuesday morning while attempting to travel from Kathmandu to China via a Sichuan Airlines flight.

The airport security office stated that various currencies she was attempting to take abroad hidden in her bag were discovered. Police became suspicious of her activities during routine checks at the international departure hold baggage checking area of the airport.

Upon searching her, $10,500 USD, 26,700 Euros, 7,400 Chinese Yuan, and 43,000 Swedish Kronor were recovered from her possession. According to Nepali law, attempting to illegally carry foreign currency exceeding the specified limit without permission is considered unlawful.

The arrested Khandro, along with the seized currency, has been sent to the Department of Revenue Investigation in Hariharbhawan, Lalitpur, for further investigation and legal action.
