Mystical Manichud Lake: A Serene Retreat Hidden in Kathmandu's Hills

Kathmandu. Hidden within the dense forests of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, which stretches across the northern hilly region of the Kathmandu Valley, lies the serene and mysterious Manichud Lake (Daha).

Known as a center of religious faith alongside its natural beauty, this lake offers an atmosphere completely different from the hustle and bustle of the familiar city surrounding it. It is considered an ideal destination for tourists seeking to enjoy nature away from urban life. Recently, the flow of domestic tourists to this area has also been increasing.

To reach this lake, situated at an altitude of approximately 2,400 meters above sea level, one must undertake about a three-hour uphill trek from the Jorpati-Sankhu area, Gagalphedi, or Sundarijal in Kathmandu. During the trek, the dense forest, cool air, and the chirping of birds make the journey more enjoyable. This area is also famous for peaceful hiking and bird watching.

According to mythology, King Manichud of Saket city was extremely religious and charitable. It is believed that he was born with a divine jewel on his head. There is a local legend that when a great famine and epidemic needed to be quelled, the king donated that jewel, and to do so, he sat at this very spot and severed his own head to offer the jewel. Due to the king's sacrifice and the belief stemming from the jewel's influence, this place is called 'Manichud Daha'. An interesting anecdote, still prevalent among locals, is that birds clean the lake by picking up fallen leaves.

The lush greenery, the water surface covered by a light mist, and the spiritually peaceful environment make anyone who visits meditative. The influx of devotees increases especially during the month of Shrawan.
