International Day for Countering Violent Extremism Observed Globally

Kathmandu. Today is the International Day for Countering Violent Extremism. This day is being observed in various countries around the world with the objective of expanding awareness against violent extremism and strengthening international cooperation.

This is the fourth year that this day is being observed following the call of the United Nations. At the UN Headquarters as well as in UN offices in other countries around the world, all stakeholders, including representatives from intergovernmental organizations, civil society, religious leaders, the private sector, educational institutions, and the media, will unite to express solidarity for the prevention of violent extremism.

Emphasizing that terrorism and violent extremism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group, the UN has urged for increased coordination among the global community to prevent violent extremism.

Furthermore, the global organization stated that efforts should be made to identify and prevent the root causes of violent extremism through solutions based on dialogue, partnership, and community leadership.

It noted that purely security measures are insufficient for long-term peace and stability, making it imperative to also consider social, economic, and ideological aspects. On the occasion of this day, the UN has also called upon citizens and organizations worldwide to engage in shared responsibility and cooperation.
