UN Reiterates Support for All Effort Aimed at Ending War in Sudan.
The United Nations reaffirmed its support for any effort aimed at ending the war in Sudan and preserving its unity and territorial integrity, announcing that it had taken note of the peace initiative presented by Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris.
The UN Spokesperson's Office stated today that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues to emphasize the critical importance of achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace in Sudan, calling on the parties to agree to an immediate cessation of hostilities and reach a permanent ceasefire.
The Office urged all Sudanese actors to prioritize consensus and formulate a shared vision for a civilian-led transition, explaining that Ramtane Lamamra, the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy to Sudan, is fully prepared to continue consultations with both parties on reaching a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the conflict, complementing and reinforcing the ongoing efforts of Member States and key partners.
During a Security Council session, Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris presented a peace initiative for Sudan, stating that it was based on international principles and offered a comprehensive, realistic, and applicable framework for protecting civilians from atrocities, restoring state authority and responsibility, and paving the way for national reconciliation.
Idris elaborated on the initiative's provisions, including a ceasefire, the assembly of fighters in designated camps, disarmament, and addressing the needs of internally displaced persons, refugees, and humanitarian aid.
