Kathmandu Metropolitan City Removes Concrete in Hanuman Dhoka Area After Protests
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started removing concrete from the Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square area following strong opposition from locals and heritage conservationists. Earlier, the city had initiated work to replace old stone and concrete structures with water-rechargeable designs to improve groundwater absorption. However, instead of removing the old cobblestones (pitch), workers began adding a new layer of cement, sparking criticism.
Public Outcry Over Cement Work
Locals and heritage activists protested when images surfaced showing fresh cement being poured directly over the existing cobblestones. They argued that this went against the original plan of creating a water-friendly structure. The controversy grew, leading Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol to personally visit the site for inspection.
Action Taken After Inspection
After reviewing the situation, the KMC ordered the removal of the newly laid concrete. The city has now resumed work to restore the area with proper water-rechargeable designs, as initially promised. This move aims to balance urban development with heritage conservation and environmental sustainability.
