Government Links Electricity to Citizen and National Income Growth: Minister Khadka
Kathmandu – Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka has emphasized the government's commitment to connecting electricity access with individual and national income generation. Speaking at the silver jubilee celebration of the Nepal Solar Energy Producers' Association in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Khadka acknowledged the growing demand for electricity while highlighting Nepal's progress in solar energy production.
Expanding Electricity Access and Solar Potential
Minister Khadka noted that despite the government's efforts, many households still lack reliable electricity access. He praised solar energy as a viable solution to bridge this gap, particularly in areas where grid expansion remains challenging. Additionally, he highlighted the positive impact of solar-powered irrigation pumps in transforming previously non-irrigated lands into productive agricultural zones.
Challenges and Ambitious Targets
While electricity demand continues to rise, Khadka pointed out that challenges such as environmental concerns persist. The government has set an ambitious target of producing 28,500 megawatts of electricity within the next 10 years, a goal that requires collective effort from all stakeholders.
Balancing Growth and Sustainability
The minister stressed that environmental impacts must be addressed, emphasizing that collaboration is essential to finding sustainable solutions. By integrating electricity production with economic opportunities, the government aims to enhance livelihoods while ensuring energy security for the nation.
Khadka's remarks underscore Nepal's push toward renewable energy expansion while acknowledging the hurdles that remain in achieving universal electricity access.
