Toxic, Inedible Mustard Greens (Rayo Spinach) from Dolakha Found in Kathmandu Market

Kathmandu;  Mustard greens (Rayo Spinach) imported from Dolakha to the Kalimati Vegetable Market have been found to contain dangerously high levels of pesticide residue.

Key Findings:

  • The mustard greens, brought by Ishwar Bharati from Dolakha, tested positive for organophosphate pesticide at over 80% concentration far exceeding the safe limit.

  • Safety Standard: If pesticide levels exceed 45%, the produce must be completely destroyed due to health risks. Organophosphates are toxic insecticides harmful to humans.

Ongoing Monitoring:

The Pesticide Residue Analysis Laboratory Unit in Kalimati conducts daily tests on vegetables and fruits arriving at the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Committee. This incident highlights gaps in food safety enforcement.

Health Warning:

Consumption of such contaminated greens can lead to poisoning, neurological damage, and long-term health issues. Authorities must take strict action to prevent unsafe produce from reaching consumers.
