Minister Gurung warns of ban on Facebook and Instagram if they fail to register
Kathmandu, February 5 — Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has stated that the government is preparing to introduce a social media regulation bill to address the growing issue of disorderly conduct and expressions that undermine social harmony and religious tolerance.
He remarked, "Social media has become chaotic, and it is necessary to regulate it as per the public demand."
Minister Gurung emphasized that while freedom of expression is an essential part of democracy, harmful and divisive comments that disturb national unity and social peace are unacceptable.
He particularly highlighted that those who disrupt religious harmony and spread hatred would face penalties under the new legislation.
Despite some opposition to the bill, Minister Gurung stated that disagreement and debate are natural in a democracy.
He added, "We aim to regulate all aspects of social media, including the spread of false information, manipulation of news, and actions that negatively impact society."
The primary goal of the bill, according to Gurung, is to control the chaos and strengthen democracy. "Strengthening democracy is crucial for making Nepal's journey toward prosperity easier," he said.
He assured that the Information Technology and Cyber Security Bill would be presented in the current session of parliament.
He further stated, "Social media platforms must operate only after being registered with the government. Currently, the only registered platform operating in Nepal is TikTok. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and others have been invited to register."
Minister Gurung warned that platforms that do not register with the government would be banned.
"Platforms that operate in Nepal must comply with the country's legal standards," he emphasized.
Gurung concluded by affirming that the government is ready to create a favorable environment for platforms that register and that social media should function according to the country's laws, not in an anarchic manner.
