Over 100,000 leave Kathmandu Valley via air in just six days
Kathmandu, October 6 — In the past six days alone, over 100,000 people have left the Kathmandu Valley via air. Following heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding and landslides, a total of 105,440 passengers have traveled to various destinations by air from the valley.
From last Friday to Sunday, daily life was affected by continuous rain. However, since Monday, the weather has completely cleared, allowing 19,165 people to leave the valley in a single day through 450 flights, according to the Tribhuvan International Airport office.
Spokesperson Riji Sherpa informed that 18,137 people left the valley through 434 flights on Tuesday. The following day, Wednesday, 17,004 individuals departed. The number of travelers decreased on that day because only 375 flights were operational due to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's return from the United States, which caused a temporary halt in operations.
On Thursday, 18,003 people left the valley through 309 flights. Similarly, on Saturday, 16,378 individuals departed via 299 flights, as informed by spokesperson Sherpa.
Although the rain has stopped, the monsoon remains active, and landslides in certain areas have made road travel difficult. As a result, the demand for air tickets has surged, with more people preferring to fly rather than travel by road due to safety concerns and the lengthy journey involved.
