Nepal requests Interpol for GB Rai's extradition

Kathmandu, September 6 —Nepal Police has once again requested the International Police Organization (Interpol) to arrest Gitendrababu (GB) Rai, the founding chairman of Suryadarshan Cooperative. A senior officer from the police headquarters confirmed to Ratopati that a second request was sent to Interpol through the National Central Bureau (NCB) in Kathmandu.

After GB was located in Malaysia, the previously issued diffusion notice from January 27 was upgraded to a 'Red Notice.' Despite this, Malaysia has refused to arrest and extradite him, prompting the police to follow up with Interpol.

A senior Nepal Police official stated, “We have submitted all necessary documents, including treaties and agreements between Nepal and Malaysia, to Interpol.”

The Red Notice allows Interpol to facilitate the arrest and deportation of the individual. However, the Malaysian government remains hesitant to take action.

GB’s group is accused of embezzling over 1.35 billion NPR from the Suryadarshan Cooperative in Pokhara. The District Police Office in Kaski has investigated the case, which is now pending in court.

Rabi Lamichhane, president of RSP, is also implicated in the misappropriation of funds from Suryadarshan through an unsecured loan.

Further investigations revealed that the accused also embezzled deposits from other cooperatives, including Supreme Savings in Butwal, Sahara Chitwan Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society in Chitwan, and Sano Paailaa Cooperative in Birgunj.

Evidence suggests that GB’s group funneled these embezzled funds into Gorkha Media Network accounts.

With the issuance of the Red Notice, Interpol’s affiliated police organizations are responsible for expediting the deportation of the accused. Nepal Police has already certified the required documents at the District Court Kaski and forwarded them to Interpol.

Additionally, diffusion notices have been issued against the current chairman of Suryadarshan Cooperative, Than Bahadur Budha Magar of Baglung, former chairman Bhupendra Rai of Okhaldhunga, and former member Shiva Bahadur Guru.
